During a dental humanitarian trip to Bolivia, while working at an orphanage, Dr. Shinn met a young boy with a twisted spine named Alfonso Figueroa.
After a few years of effort from Dr. Shinn and schoolchildren from the US who wrote hundreds of letters to spread the word about Alfonso and raised money to help with a life changing surgery.
